berlin calling

Berlin Calling

So my first assignment at Media Design was immediately an interesting task: create a moodboard about yourself. After a lot of searching for the right elements I created a square with typical things which triggers me.

The area is inside a building at Berlin called Kraftwerk. I put a few layers over the background (Kraftwerk building) with pictures of my visit at Berlin last year.  Those are the pink and green effects you see. Thereafter I placed some elements like a subway, the girl, the crane and men on it. These are things telling something about me. I choose the text ‘you are what you dance’ to put on the ceiling of the building to let people know that I am very interested into dance music. And last but not least, I am obsessed with vinyl.

Poppodium Grenswerk

Poppodium Grenswerk | Part II

After the first experience I had at Grenswerk I decided to come back after an one month break to finish my final major project at school. As soon as I passed that exam I directly resumed my internship in Venlo. I did also a bit of marketing activities the second half year besides the graphic design.
For example: every week I wrote a newsletter and helped my fellow intern to write small texts for posts at our social media channels which you can see bellow. We also had to investigate our target audience for specific events so we could make a plan to promote our new shows. I worked frequently together with the other interns of the different aspects at the small music venue.

During this year I’ve met a lot of new people from that area, this made me build up my network to a next level. I also found out that I wanted to continue working in this kind of business in the future. That made me make te choice to continue studying after finishing SintLucas. Get to know about this at the Education section.

stamp card

Vershal het Veem

Create a stamp card for market hall Vershal het Veem located at Strijp-S in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

Strijp-S is the most creative and cultural area of Eindhoven with an industrial vibe. It is the center where all kind of people come together. For example, because they live, but also for lunch, drinking coffee, shopping and working in this very nice area. The hall is located across the street where I went to school at SintLucas.  It is a covered building including a brewery. Smell, taste, eat, drink, buy and cook!

A fellow student from another study at SintLucas contacted me with the request to design a stamp card for the market hall. It was her final assignment of the semester to find a designer for this occasion. She and her companion were so well prepared that they already had a design in mind which I only had to create on the computer, and so I did. I made a couple corrections to make it work. I had to investigate the website of Vershal het Veem very often to make sure it would be in their corporate identity style.
Fun fact: I have met the girl at Grenswerk during my first part of the internship in Venlo before I knew she also studies at SintLucas in Eindhoven.

Specifications stamp card artwork

Make sure the logo and address of Vershal het Veem are clearly visible. The specific text and logo will be provided by the market hall. Use the same font and colors as on their website shown.

Find out more about the covered market hall at www.vershalhetveem.nl. Check out the opening hours to plan your visit at Vershal het Veem. For further information about Strijp-S I would recommend you to visite their website at www.strijp-s.nl. The area is easy to reach by train.

final major project

THINK! Campaign

Final Major Project: conceptualize, design and deliver a campaign that will educate and encourage men to drive more safely.

To prove my skills at SintLucas I had to achieve the final major project. We were able to pick one assignment out of a few different kind of tasks. Not only the companies were varies also the content was alternating.
For example: design a new packaging for chocolate bars or create a full campaign to make people aware of the hazards while driving using drugs or alcohol. I picked the last one because I do not prefer to design a packaging.

Young male drivers are more likely to be involved in car crashes than any other
demographic. Every year, the THINK! campaign focuses on addressing the audiences and issues which account for the bulk of casualties. THINK! has a long track record of changing people’s attitudes towards dangerous driving.
Priority messages for drivers this year aim to highlight the dangers of:
• Drink driving: a second drink can double your chances of a fatal collision
• Drug driving: the roadside swab identifies drug drivers on the spot

The concept I created is all about hashtags (#) to reach the target audience in a modern way. It is easy to find these hashtags on social media like Facebook and Instagram. Catchy phrases let people think twice about the effects of being on drugs and/or alcohol. The final campaign contains five poster designs, a fictional Facebook page and a fictional Instagram feed.

Make sure the logo and website link are visible on every kind of design. It is forbidden to use regular photos from Google. Make your own photos or use (paid) stock photos.

If you would like to know more about the campaign you definitely should visit www.think.direct.gov.uk to read about the stories.

DJ N-QUE

DJ N-QUE

Create a logo for the young female future house named DJ N-QUE.

A fellow intern asked me during my internship at Grenswerk if I would like to create a logo for her starting music career. She saw my skills rising during the internship and she was impressed. Of course I said yes because I really love music related design tasks.
Since a year or so she started deejaying as DJ N-QUE. She frequently plays different styles like House music, Electric House music and Moombahton but mostly Future House music. You can find her at all kind of parties in the south of Holland (in Venlo area).

The logo was build out of typography. By using this font the figurative mark does not look too masculine but also not too feminine. The colors black and white are something that belongs in this music scene. It is a very simple design but that makes it a fixed and timeless logo. Less is more!

Specifications DJ N-QUE artwork

Make sure the logo is not too masculine, but it has to fit with the genre. The colors must be black and/or white. It would be nice if the DJ name is spelled in capital letters.

Beside this logo I also created her social media channels which you can like on Facebook, follow at Instagram and listen to on SoundCloud.
Please send her a message via Facebook if you are interested booking the Future House DJ N-QUE for your party or event. See you on the dancefloor!

grenswerk

Poppodium Grenswerk | Part I

At the end of August 2016 I started my internship at Poppodium Grenswerk located in Venlo, the Netherlands. This is a small music venue in the south of Holland which opened in 2014 so it is still kind of a new venue. Music is my passion, I really would like to work in this business. This internship was a nice opportunity to learn more about this environment. I got to know a lot about the design aspect but also about the production preparing for all kind of events.

I had a couple tasks which I had to do (almost) every week. For example the of course most important thing: the artwork like posters/flyers and social media content for the upcoming events. Besides that I also cared for the narrowcasting to be up to date in the whole building including our cafe. Our narrowcasting screens are in other building too like the museums and other cafes.
Talking about cafes, our Grenswerk cafe was an important aspect of my journey. I did nearly all the artwork for it and I had to keep that up to date by myself. Including the menu card, narrowcasting, Facebook (images) and program flyer. They gave me a lot of responsibility through my whole experience.

Typografie Groningen

Groningen

Visualize a typographical map of a specific area in the Netherlands.

Groningen it is! Currently in North of Holland there is a lot of protest against the gas fracking.

Every city of the provice Groningen is on the map visualized in a typographic way. The printed version of this design includes damage created by cutting out pieces and made it wrinkled. This is out of protest against the gas fracking, like the ground in real life.

I picked a specific eroded font to show the damage immediately. The colors are inspired by the flag of the province Groningen. On the other hand are the colors great to pick green as landscape and blue for the water. The red color is perfect to use as a contrast. You cannot see the rest of the Netherlands on the map but this makes it more clear that Groningen will drive apart form the rest of the country when this will continue…

The typography map was one of the assignments I did for my career at SintLucas. I was the only candidate who picked this area for the task. A friend of mine lives since a couple years over there in the North of Holland so he send me a lot of information by post. I have been a couple times in Groningen so I knew which area I had chosen.

anything could happen

Anything Could Happen

Show a secret without telling anything about it.

Typography is my passion which I use a lot in my graphic design world. Besides that I also have another great passion, music! One of my favourite artists is Ellie Goulding who is famous because of her Synthpop music. The song Anything Could Happen was one of her first records.

The title of the song says enough but it made me think twice because you could interpreted it differently. In first instance you would assume it is about a positive vibe. But it could also have a dark side.

The series shows three kind of aspects. First the positive aspect by showing a pineapple, because pineapples are great, delicious and never a bad idea.
Secondly the opposite is a negative aspect by showing a grenade. It is a war sign, sign of dead. No happy feelings at all.
Third and last one is the dreamcatcher which shows you that your dreams can come true because Anything Could Happen when you believe in yourself!

Each design has the same colors: red, green, orange, green, blue, black and white. These are colors you can use for any occasion. On the other hand the main difference is the font type because all of them have another type. The font selection shows immediately what it is about, even when you would not see an image behind it.

I made a posters serie just because I like posters madly, it gives you a clear vision of a message you would like to tell. The posters are in real life A3 each. I did not made them by using the computer because we had to stand out of our comfort zone.

Lessons called Creativity at SintLucas gave us the opportunity to think without setting any boundaries and using things you really like in life. This task was one of them.

Schrobbelèr

I supported my trainee supervisor in making all kinds of advertisment materials of Schrobbelèr. A few examples are posters, (Facebook) ads, labels, contests, (roll up) banners, buttons, tiles, coupons, animated videos, picture frames, newsletters etc.

All these things I have made at the company were in a specific Schrobbelèr corporate identity. By working in this style I got to know really fast how to work with this identity in a professional way.
I was in contact with outstanding companies a lot of times because Schrobbelèr works together with a lot of different companies and events. Schrobbelèr is prominently present at events during the whole year.

Finally I learned a lot about a company who seemed very huge but is actually a rather small organisation. Futhermore I got to know a whole new culture. I worked together with several people to make something small very big.
They gave me a lot of space to develop my creative working process.

Poem

At the first year at SintLucas received a lot of assignments to broaden our creativity. That is also how this lesson is called, Creativity. We learned to create a piece of art by first generating a concept.

Well this artwork is derived from a poem which was given by our teacher. The poem has something to do with fairy-tales.

My father collects as much as he can Vinyl music and I got inspired by his fascination for music or the artwork of it. A lot of songs are told by a story as well as a poem is.

It was the first time of using the technique with putting words on a circle instead of typing horizontal.
